Mittels Bluetooth, dem Standard für mobile Kommunikation im Nahbereich, können bis zu acht Geräte in einem so genannten Piconet miteinander kommunizieren. Bis zu 10 Piconet lassen sich zu einem Kommunikationsverbund vereinen. Mehrere Piconets mit sich überlappenden Funkbereichen werden als Scatternet bezeichnet. Die Spezifikationen für die Verwaltung eines Scatternets sind noch nicht definiert.
