PDF ohne PDFlib in PHP

ich suche nach einer möglichkeit, mittels PHP on the fly PDFs zu generieren. allerdings habe ich auf dem mir zur verfügung stehenden webhost nur PHP 4.4.4, allerdings ohne installierter PDFlib. die PDF-referenz von PHP nennt mir hier alternative, "modulfreie" klassen, aber:

PC4P geht nicht, da PDFlib nötig.

pdf4php funktioniert nicht, die generierten PDFs sind fehlerhaft.

was ich nicht möchte, ist die PDFs zeichen für zeichen schreiben zu müssen - dazu müsste ich erst die spezifikation lesen, was mir den aufwand nicht wert ist.
