Pfad mit Leerzeichen in Variable

Ich speichere mir einen Pfad in einer Variablen. Dieser Pfad enthält teilweise Leerzeichen, Deshalb füge ich vor jedes Leerzeichen einen Backslash ein. Wenn ich jetzt versuche die datei deren Pfad es ist über cp $pfad kopie zu kopieren funktioniert das nicht, gebe ich aber pfad per echo aus und kopiere es manuel an die stelle statt $pfad funktioniert es.
