Diese Software macht gar nichts, das ist (wie es der Name schon sagt) nur der Quellcode für die Firmware, die auch fertig kompiliert zum Download angeboten wird.

Der Quellcode muss veröffentlicht werden, wenn die Software/Firmware Open Source-Software beinhaltet, die unter einer bestimmten Lizenz veröffentlicht wurde, die eben das vorschreibt.
