problem ist jetzt nur: dort wo <br> stand, werden die wörter die davor / dahinter stehen zusammengefügt, wie kann man das verhindern?

Warum nutzt du nicht htmlentities() ?

Die nimmt dir das ganze ab. Wenn du vorher noch br2nl() (oder so ähnlich) auf den String anwendest, hast du sogar den Zeilenumbruch erhalten.
