  1. Wait, you're learning basic English grammar at vocational school?
  2. @Asura I'll do that if I find the time. Back in vocational school I was pretty stupid. We've had English lessons there as well. The premise was for it to be on a 9th grade level of "Realschule", which was a real bummer to me, who has had English "Leistungskurs" at school. Most of the other students didn't really like to express themselves in English. So I basically had a dialogue with my teacher for two periods. After those two times he said that he'll have a tough time rating the class. So everyone was supposed to do a written homework over the course of the year in order for him to be able to determine a grade for the students. Then he looked at me and said: "Well, she doesn't because she'll have an A anyway." He basically said I could stay absent from the class for the rest of the year - but I didn't get it. So I stayed. Because I like English. Yeah, sometimes I'm stupid like that...
  3. Klingt nach nem guten Abend, Ulfi!
  4. I was pretty good at the occasional vocab quiz. Mostly because I picked up those words in the units which we were working through anyway. And yeah, I also need to know ALL THE WORDS. The nice thing is that I don't forget them after looking them up once. I wish I'd have this gift when it comes to other important stuff. *g* Valentines day? I'm single right now, so I won't do anything special today. But if there's someone who wants to give me some flowers, invite me to dinner or finds a nice way to spend the evening with me, I'm game. Totally.
  5. Confession time: I stopped learning vocab when I was in the second half ot the sixth grade. Definitely not something to recommend to anyone. I just found out that I learned them best as I went along while reading books, listening to music, watching movies...
  6. I mostly try to differentiate what is commonly known everywhere and what is a distinct German thing. Or I compare it to things known to them. Like explaining that the "Abitur" is comparable to a diploma that you get after you finished school or that it's a qualification that enables you to attend University.
  7. I wouldn't wanna translate "Abitur". Gaining the "Abitur" would be comparable to graduation I guess. But discribing something as a qualification for the "Abitur" or adressing the "Abitur" itself, I would just stick to the German word. It's a pretty specific thing which isn't really comparable to anything in the US, the UK or any other English speaking country.
  8. French at school was bad timing back then. I wasn't really motivated because I've had tons of other problems (like teenagers do). To top it off, the teacher was bad and psychologically unstable. He wasn't able to get the things across in a way that we would understand them and he had troubles of his own that had an influence on how he'd be able to manage a class full of teenagers. I'd say, it wasn't a responsible decision from our school to let this man teach us in the state that he was in back then. @Grimlet Yeah, I was gonna go for duolingo when the sea gets quieter and it'll be easier to concentrate on other things than the position of your sails and the wind.
  9. Oh I'm quite happy to know that I am quite fluent in English. It's absolutely helpful all around the world. Still I'd love to learn French and Spanish. Sadly, I just lack the time to do so. There are things that have a way higher priority than learning another language.
  10. I don't really think about how to translate x to y. Often times I just kinda switch into the other language, meaning that I actually start to think in that specific language. Which saves a lot of time but also takes a lot of practice, I suppose. It may also be helpful that I seem to have a thing with languages. If only I would know more of them rather than only German and English.
  11. I'm referring to a mistake of people. A mistake made by people. It's their mistake. That's what I mean by an indication of a case. But yeah, the problem in your first link seems to be similar to mine. So it's probably people's.
  12. I'd say it's more a question of "apostrophe at the end" and "no apostrophe at the end" rather than "apostrophe at the end" or "apostrophe before s". Your suggestion points more towards a swallowed letter (indicated by the apostrophe) while mine is directed at a certain case that has to be used. But I could be wrong. But yeah, I was struggling with that one.
  13. Yep. Yeah, I guess so. But here's me hoping, you'll become better in time. And also I hope that there's not only me who's helping out but many others who can pinpoint and correct other peoples' mistakes (even mine).
  14. *schnief* Keiner scheint meinen English-Thread interessant zu finden. Naja, andererseits spare ich mir damit Arbeit, die ich mir sonst aufgehalst hätte.
  15. Hey folks, it's been a long time since we've had a thread in here where everyone could join in and try to improve his or her English skills. All I'm offering is an oppurtunity to post stuff in English here - topics may vary and are not bound to be IT-related - while I'm helping you to improve by correcting a bit on the most obvious mistakes. So if you feel the need to improve in sort of like a safe space where errors and mistakes are totally fine and not met with destructive criticism rather than helpful advice, feel free to join in and have a nice chat with us. Disclaimer: I'm not perfect, so if there's a mistake that I made, feel free to also correct me on that.
  16. Verstehe.
  17. Kannst Du nicht im Zweifel in Do bleiben und da was suchen + Wohnung?
  18. "Peinliche Aufnahmen" ist mein zweiter Vorname. Spaß beiseite, ich kann gut über mich selbst lachen und gerade bei so einem Auftritt wie bei Ulfmann beschrieben, ist es ja eher ein Spaß, als dass bspw. auf Film festgehalten wird, wie einem versehentlich bei einer Präsentation die Hose platzt.
  19. Klingt super! War's ein Wettbewerb? Also gab's auch eine Gewinnerband?
  20. @Ulfmann Cool! Berichte dann mal morgen!
  21. Morgen!
