VFL, as I mentioned yesterday in the irc-chat, use english please, if you have problems with german.

For all other users: VFL is using a Linux Server with CUPS, attached a Laserjet 4L via LPT. Now he is trying to connect via network from his notebook with Windows 7 to the printer share from his Linux system.

I know, technically it is no problem, but if anyone has a detailled explanation with win 7 for this, it would be nice if he or she could post it here.

Can anybody check please, if the Laserjet 4L ships with the Win 7 DVD or if it has to be downloaded from Microsoft or HP?

Thanks in advance for using english in this thread.

Adding network printers on Windows 7 using manually downloaded drivers:

  1. Download the appropriate driver package
  2. Make sure the *.inf-files of the driver are accessible directly
  3. Navigate to the network share (e.g. \\printserver\)
  4. Right-Click on the printer you want to connect to
  5. Assistant starts searching for a driver and stops after a while
  6. Now manually select the driver by clicking on "Browse"
  7. Locate and choose the *.inf in the driver directory
  8. Click OK and wait until Windows finished installing the printer

An alternative way would be by adding the driver to the local Printspoolerservice (Start -> Systemsteuerung -> Geräte und Drucker -> Druckservereigenschaften) before installing the printer.

..or you could try to install the printer locally:

Use the assistant and pretend to use the local port LPT1: (install as usual).

Then change the printer port to the UNC name of the shared printer:

Properties -> Details -> Choose Add Port -> Enter the share name eg. "\\server\printer" -> select that and you're done..

Ripper

PS: Never ever use Google Translate, Babelfish, etc. when you are able to speak some more or less understandable English (pidgin's enough) :)

Windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit? Only 64 bit Windows refuses to install unsigned drivers, on a 32 bit system you can install unsigned drivers, it is only a warning windows displays.

As I am interested in this problem, I did search microsoft knowledge base for updating drivers via windows update.

First of all, windows only can find drivers for stuff directly connected to your pc. It is technically impossible automatically finding drivers for a shared printer on a linux host.

The other problem, windows update button is greyed out: the only idea I have is that microsoft update is generally deactivated on this machine.

The third problem: as windows "sees" no new unknown printer, there is no need to update drivers.

So, finally: the ways to install a printer driver are shown (thanks to the other users who followed my wish and used english here). If (what I still cannot believe) windows does not support oldschool laserjet dinosaurs, try to use a appropriate driver from windows, a Laserjet 4000 driver should work fine.

Alternativly download the HP universal printer driver. This one exists for 64 bit systems too and is digitally signed. This driver works fine with nearly every HP laser printer.

I did have try many time downlaod from HP. for Vista 32-bit. it hasn digitally signed i need a signed drive for my HP-Laserjet 4L, weill i have saw it. at my friends He have signed HP driver.

I have Win 7 Ultima MSDN-AA got from my school, and he has download from the Site Win 7 ULTIMATE. Maybe it different than MSDN-AA i will try Install other Win7 Ultimate on VirtalMaschiene.

If it is like this: Why don't you copy out these signed drivers from your Friend? It is possible to copy drivers out of a running system. For example with Driverguide Toolkit. I use this little Tool with all of my PCs right before i reinstall Windows for the chance to reuse the drivers from the old installed Windows without connecting to the Internet. Only those Catalyst- and Detonator-Drivers had difficulties with this Solution. It's worth a try.

If this Software is to expensive it also goes manually: Open the Device-Manager and search for the driver details. Copy those shown files to one folder. Open the Regedit searching under "HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Control\Class" for the Name of the Device( check spelling correctly). In the Folder of the Key "DriverDesc" = "DeviceName" there is the Key InfPath. This in the Key named .inf has to be copied out to your folder and Voila: The driver is complete. If this key has only a name like "oem5.inf" it should be found in the "Windows\Inf"-Folder.
