    Das kommt auf die eigenen Englischkenntnisse an, sind sie besser als die des Übersetzers, dann unbedingt auf Englisch lesen. Anderenfalls kommt es darauf an, ob man sein Fachenglisch trainieren will. Das würde den geistigen Fokus auf die konkreten Informatikthemen wiederum verringern. Ich persönlich habe die Bücher auf Deutsch gekauft.

    Spontan muß ich an die Bücher von Andrew Tannenbaum denken. Da werden Betriebssysteme, Netzwerke und Hardware auf einem Niveau erklärt, das für Deinen Hintergrund genau richtig sein dürfte: Sehr fundiert, aber anschaulich und alle (wenigen) formalen Erklärungen für einen Mathematiker easy.

    * TCP/IP-Standardwerk: W. Richard Stevens - TCP/IP Illustrated (die 2nd Edition von Kevin R. Fall ist nicht ganz so gut, aber enthält dafür IPv6)
    * Projekte etc.: Frederick P. Brooks - The Mythical Man-Month
