Die NASA will n Basis-Stationen verteilt über die USA mit Kommunikationskanälen verbinden. Jedes Paar dieser Basis-Stationen verfügt über eine unterschiedliche Verbindungs-Bandbreite, welche im Voraus bekannt ist. Die NASA will n-1 Kanäle auswählen, so dass alle Basis-Stationen miteinander verbunden sind, aber die gesamte Bandbreite maximal ist (die gesamte Bandbreite ist als die Summe der einzelnen Bandbreiten definiert).
